This website, and the breeding program it represents, is a heartfelt tribute to Jane Folkman, founder of Seastar Kennels, loving sister, friend, mentor, and a true champion of the Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever.
Thirty years ago, Jane was drawn to the Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever for its intelligence, unmistakable spirit and family companionship. That passion took shape with Rosie, an exceptional Toller whose type, structure, and success in both field and conformation became the blueprint for Seastar. From Rosie came the “Rosebuds” litter, and from it Sadie, her a once-in-a-lifetime companion, who anchored the next generation and helped set the course for the Seastar line.
What followed was a lifetime devoted to preserving and improving the breed through thoughtful, ethical breeding rooted in sound structure, stable temperament, and true working ability. Seastar Kennels became known not only as “The Home of Award Winning Tollers,” but also as a source of dogs who thrived as companions, competitors, and working partners.
Jane was more than a breeder; she was a mentor, a guide, and a steadfast steward of the Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever. Generous with her time and knowledge, unwavering in her principles, she shaped countless breeders, owners, and friends who were fortunate enough to learn from her.
As Health Chair for the Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever Club (USA) for many years, she worked tirelessly to advocate for the breed’s long-term well-being. She championed responsible breeding practices, advanced the use of health testing, and emphasized the importance of sound genetics and overall canine health. She spent tireless hours along side Sue Van Sloun and Dr. Aguirre to introduce the breed's Optigen PRA test in early 2002 along with numerous other health & genetic advancements.
Because of Jane, the heart of the Seastar program lies in an unwavering belief that dogs should be bred with intention, integrity, and respect for the breed, for the families who will love them, and for the future of Tollers yet to be born.
In 2022, Jane stepped back from Seastar Kennels and entrusted its future to her sister, Laurie, and close friend, Ashley. She remained a guiding presence and mentor until her unexpected passing in 2023, a loss felt deeply across the Toller community worldwide. Her vision remains the foundation of Seastar, carried forward by those who share her values, her passion, and her devotion to the breed.
Every breeding decision made, every puppy raised, and every relationship formed with a Seastar family reflects Jane’s enduring influence. Her legacy lives on in each Seastar Toller, in their character, their ability, and the joy they bring to the lives they touch.
Jane surely did love all her puppies, especially Lemmy with his cowboy hats!
